Ongoing ink and wash drawings, 14 x 11 inches each.

These represent a few of the small pen and ink drawings I’ve been making since 2012. Using a nibbed pen with ink and wash I deliberately place marks on paper. The diluted color soaks into the surface as I decide which way the line must turn. I use the basic reading of line as a compass to determine which move comes next. Each drawing happens in sequence with slight shifts in the forms as I move on to the next sheet of paper. I do them at night to keep the momentum going from the studio day and to teach myself new vocabulary for the next. They are improvised, and I’m looking to describe new shapes and structures through the serial nature of their making.

Several of these drawings are from a group that I made at a residency for science research and art called Lacawac. This is the Lenape word for “river that forks.” I think of my work in this way, and made stacks of drawings there.
